World Languages Standards & Instructional Toolkit Resources

The 2024 North Carolina Standard Course of Study for World Languages was approved by the State Board of Education at their July 11, 2024 meeting, and the World Languages' Installation Timeline Links to an external site. shows the professional development that's planned for the rollout of the new standards.

Here are the materials, including the standards document and instructional support tools, that have been released to date:

Note: The current 2010 World Languages Standard Course of Study Links to an external site. will remain in place for classroom instruction and assessment for the 2024-2025 school year.

Public School Units (PSUs) are expected to implement the 2024 North Carolina Standard Course of Study for World Languages starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Professional learning and resources to support PSU implementation will begin to be shared in fall 2024, with the finalized Proficiency Outcomes Document coming soon. 

The proficiency-based 2010 North Carolina World Language Standard Course of Study resources, such as the Crosswalk, Glossary, and five Unpacking Documents, are housed in the World Languages folder Links to an external site. on the NCDPI World Languages Standard Course of Study & Supporting Resources page Links to an external site..

The standards-based materials linked above and below were either developed by the NCDPI World Languages Team Links to an external site. as resources for the 2010 World Languages Standard Course of Study or compiled as external materials that inform and support work with our state standards, as well as all proficiency-based standards.

There are two mapping documents for the 2010 NC SCoS for World Languages, and both of them list Clarifying Objectives by proficiency level as examples of how Global Education and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are part of implementing the NC SCoS:

The North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCoS) for World Languages has objectives organized by proficiency level, using the ACTFL proficiency scale, pictured here as an inverted pyramid. Proficiency summaries, program descriptions, and minimum proficiency outcome charts for the various K-12 programs and courses in Classical Languages, Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I), Heritage Languages, and Modern Languages are available in the Proficiency Outcomes Document, a support tool for the NC SCoS for World Languages.
