Compelling Questions: How did slavery change the lives of people in North Carolina? |
Supporting Question 3: How would you describe the national debate about the continuation of slavery?
|
Introduction
During the Antebellum period the United States was deeply divided, mostly along geographic lines, about continuing the institution of slavery. This was the tension that would eventually lead to the Civil War. In order to try and quell the division compromises were attempted. Although it proved to not work, the effect of the national debate on slavery and the lead up to the Civil War impacted the lives of people all over the country. In this supporting question students take a wider, American, perspective to understand how the debate functioned and consider how it effected the lives of North Carolinians.
