Supporting Question 4:

How did World War II change America?

Introduction

North Carolina, like the nation, was impacted by the legacy of WWII in many ways.  As the world learned about the scale of the Holocaust and confronted a new world order in the nuclear age, people began to grapple with new political realities.  The economic landscape shifted as new war-time technologies were repurposed for civilian consumers and veterans returned home to start families. At the same time there was an economic boost to the state as new military bases were built. This also increased the number of active military personnel living in the state. African American soldiers and combat veterans returned to the segregated south where both de jure and de facto segregation laws limited their rights as American citizens.
