12.3 - Supporting Question 3

Compelling Questions:

Does war bring prosperity?

Supporting Question 3:

How did North Carolina try to make social and economic progress?

Introduction

During the decades after World War II, North Carolina shifted its identity, towards becoming a progressive hub of innovation. For example, by developing the Research Triangle Park. At the same time, the rural culture was celebrated in tourism campaigns and in mass media such as the Andy Griffith show.  Perhaps reflecting Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty, North Carolina had its own “Fund to End Poverty.” In this section of the module, students will explore the multiple ways North Carolina changed economically and socially. It is up to students to determine the extent to which the state succeeded in providing access to new economic wealth.
