Supporting Question 2: How did the end of World War II change the lives of North Carolinians? |
Introduction
The end of World War II brought significant changes to North Carolina. Soldiers came home from war and began to rebuild their lives and start families. The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 (GI Bill of Rights) offered nearly 16 million World War II veterans benefits that included mortgages, small-business loans, unemployment insurance, health care, job training, and free education. Political scientist Dr. Milton Greenberg, a World War II veteran and GI Bill beneficiary, said, "It is the college and university educational provisions that endure as the symbol and romance of the GI Bill." Veterans attended universities in North Carolina, such as NC State, which doubled in enrollment in the late 1940s and 50s thanks to the GI Bill.
