Introduction to Supporting Question 1

The larger history of industrialization in the United States and around the world at the turn of the 20th century had ramifications for the development of North Carolina. On one hand, North Carolina did not boast the large urban centers that grew in the northeast, nor did it experience high levels of immigration. Yet, at the same time, industrialization and the accompanying growth in technology, did impact the economy of the state and its biggest industries, including tobacco, furniture, and textiles. Perhaps the Wright Brothers provide a representative example of the sense of possibility of the age. Yet, at the same time, we know that industrialization brought its costs, including the impact on workers and the environment. Students will explore the many facets of the emerging industrial age in North Carolina through this module.
