According to historian Francis B Simkins (1897-1966) there were three markers of progress in the south after the Civil War: industry, good roads, and schools. He referred to these as the “trinity of southern progress.” In this module, students will explore the impact of the industrial revolution and the Progressive Era on the socio-cultural and political institutions of North Carolina. They will learn about the unevenness of progress and the varied experiences of people across the state.
