Introduction
On December 20, 1860 South Carolina was the first southern state to secede from the union. North Carolina did not immediately join the Confederate States of America. It wasn't until May 20, 1861 that North Carolina seceded from the Union. Though this question students can explore sources discussing the states reasons for joining the war and for their hesitancy to do so.
