Below are some ideas for connecting the information in the module to your life as an active citizen in North Carolina:

  • Write a letter to a local historic site that includes a slave plantation. Describe to them the way that slavery impacted people’s lives and ask them how they working to teach visitors to their site about the impact of slavery.
  • Write a letter to your Congressperson/people and describe to them the importance of compromise in politics, using the failure to achieve compromise during the Antebellum period as an example.
  • Contact the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Suggest to them a way that North Carolina can properly acknowledge its history of slavery, such as to install a statue, memorial, plaque, or other feature to help the people of the state recognize this part of its past.
