Supporting Question 5.4:

How did the North Carolina Constitution of 1835 impact the people of the state?

Introduction

According to historian Ronnie Faulker, “The constitutional revisions of 1835 resulted in great part from North Carolina’s acceptance of Jacksonian democracy, a political movement that emphasized participation of the common man in the political process.” Compared to the original constitution of the state from 1776, the 1835 Constitution of North Carolina addressed many of the concerns of “commoners” in the Piedmont area. Here students will learn more about the 1835 Constitutional Convention and the issues and reforms addressed.
