Introduction

In 1830 Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which eventually led to the forced removal of the Cherokee people in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama between October 1838 and March 1839.  The journey was treacherous for the Cherokee families and over a fourth of the people perished.
