Compelling Questions:

Should North Carolinians have been revolutionary?

Supporting Question 2:

How did the experiences of African Americans differ during the revolution?

Introduction

At the beginning of the American Revolution, about a fourth of the population of North Carolina were enslaved peoples and a much smaller proportion were freedmen. Many believed that a British victory would end slavery. (The British Parliament had outlawed slavery in 1833). In this section of the module, students will explore the role of black North Carolinians in the American Revolution. By studying their varied experiences, students will be required to reflect critically on the notions of liberty we commonly associate with the revolutionary period.
