2.1 - Supporting Question 1

Introduction to Supporting Question 1

Much of what we know about the native groups residing in present day North Carolina comes from European perspectives or archeological evidence. Today we know that at the time the English arrived in the Carolinas, the native peoples had established extensive trade networks and societies.  According to historian Milton Reddy (2005), by the time John Lawson traveled through Carolina in 1700, “he expressed surprise at the extent of the interaction he found between Indian villages and people” (p. 30). There were many different tribes, all with unique cultural and social traditions. For example John White’s drawings of the Algonquians “depicted a stable, advanced horticultural Indian civilization” (p. 32).  Students will begin this module by exploring evidence of the rich and varied cultures of these indigenous peoples through the use of both secondary and primary sources.
