In North Carolina, hearing screening in public and charter schools is mandated only at kindergarten entry. It is often completed as part of the required physical examination performed at the pediatrician’s office, but there is considerable variation in screening procedures, pass/fail criteria and follow-up steps.
.
According to North Carolina law Links to an external site., an audiologist or physician must formally train individuals administering hearing screenings and supervise any hearing screening program.
.
Although there is no federal mandate regarding school-age hearing screening, the goal to identify children at risk for hearing loss that could impact communication or academics is supported by IDEA 2004, which requires each state to identify and evaluate children with disabilities for the purposes of determining the need for technology, services, and supports. Considerable heterogeneity exists with regards to state and local school-age hearing screening legislation, but best practice guidelines suggest additional screening after kindergarten entry, minimally in the early elementary years.
