Can-Do Statements

The NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements are used for self-assessment as part of the Biography in LinguaFolio. Please read the How to Use LinguaFolio Can-Do Statements Links to an external site. document here or go to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements webpage Links to an external site. for additional details. The Can-Do Statements for World Languages from 2013 and 2017 are below, as are the Can-Do Statements for ESL programs, which were originally developed in North Carolina and are now used nationally.

Proficiency Grids

In addition, there are a series of proficiency grids showing the ACTFL proficiency scale, which is used in the United States for career and educational purposes, and its correspondence to other proficiency scales, such as the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) scale that is used across Europe and Asia, the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale that is used in United States diplomacy and military contexts, and the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) scale that is used nationally for students learning English as a Second Language (ESL).

In North Carolina, we have also published proficiency grids that show the ACTFL and other proficiency scales in correlation to the proficiency outcomes in our North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCoS), which includes the English Language Development Standards and the World Language Essential Standards.
