Let’s begin by revisiting the vision and purpose of the North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate. This framework isn’t just a collection of skills; it’s a vision for the future of education in our state. We’re shaping the future of education in North Carolina by focusing on durable skills—aligning education with the needs of today's job market and preparing students for success in college, careers, and civic life. Through the combination of efforts, including the adoption of the Portrait and the design of various resources such as rubrics, I Can statements, and performance tasks, we’re not only preparing students for academic success but also rethinking traditional pedagogy. These efforts aim to create active learning environments where students can develop these competencies for lifelong achievement in an ever-changing world.

The following are key strategies to embed durable skills into your teaching, making the North Carolina Portrait of a Graduate an integral part of your practice.

Think back to Module 1, where we explored the importance of explicitly teaching the Portrait of a Graduate skills. Problem-solving is a fantastic context for teaching durable skills. Module 3 showed us the power of problem-solving through the "Environmental Detectives" task in science, where students tackled real-world environmental challenges. Problem-solving tasks bring learning to life. When students tackle real-world challenges, they’re not just applying what they’ve learned—they’re discovering new ways to think and innovate. It’s in these moments of problem-solving that students develop resilience, creativity, and the confidence to take on whatever comes their way.

Create Collaborative Learning Environments

In Module 4, we explored collaboration through tasks that required students to work together, such as in the World Languages project where they engaged in immersive cultural experiences. In a classroom where collaboration thrives, students learn that they can achieve more together than alone. They practice adaptability, learn to communicate effectively, and understand the value of diverse perspectives. These aren’t just lessons for the classroom — they’re lessons for life, teaching students how to navigate the world through collaboration and shared understanding.

Teach Students How to Engage in Peer Critique and Self-Reflection

In Module 6, we explored the "Inspiring Awareness - Teen Issue PSA" task, where students were explicitly taught how to engage in structured peer critique using rubrics. This provided them with specific, actionable feedback that guided their learning journey. With clear, focused input from their peers, students were able to reflect deeply on their work. This reflection was more than just a pause — it was an opportunity to self-assess, think critically about their progress, and identify concrete steps for improvement. This structured approach to feedback, combined with intentional reflection, transforms the learning experience and fosters genuine growth.

In a school that fosters durable skills, students develop their agency over time. Through explicit teaching and modeling, they acquire the skills needed to become leaders of their own learning. In Module 8, the "Environmental Detectives" task exemplifies this approach to fostering student autonomy. The teacher uses a structured process that guides students through inquiry, modeling each step so they can work effectively in teams with minimal support. Throughout the task, students rely on a well-organized science notebook, which equips them with the tools to engage independently in each process after receiving clear instruction. Additionally, the teacher encourages students to solve problems within their teams before seeking help, empowering them to tackle complex tasks with increasing confidence and independence. This approach not only fosters autonomy but also enables students to take charge of their learning, pursue their interests, and take responsibility for their growth.

In Module 7, when students engaged in the "Voices of the Revolution" task, we saw how they set goals and reflected on their progress. By building in regular moments for a review of goals and reflection, we help our students develop a mindset of continuous improvement. When students set their own goals and reflect on them, they start to see their learning as a journey. This practice encourages them to take ownership, pursue their interests, and persist through challenges, making their achievements more meaningful.

Engage Students in Meaningful Work

The power of meaningful work lies in its ability to connect students' learning to the real world, making their education relevant and impactful. In Module 9, we explored the "Inspiring Awareness - Teen Issue PSA" task, where students created public service announcements addressing critical issues affecting teens. This task provided students with the opportunity to engage in meaningful work that mattered to them and their community. By focusing on real-world issues, students were motivated to produce high-quality work, knowing that their efforts could make a tangible impact. This kind of meaningful work not only aligns with academic standards but also inspires students to take ownership of their learning and apply their skills in authentic, impactful ways.
